Gareth Southgate has eight months to mull over his European Championship selection after England sealed their place at next summer’s finals with two games to spare cagayan
Tuesday’s 3-1 win against Italy underlined their place among the favourites in Germany and the PA news agency has analysed how Southgate likely sees his options for the squad right now cagayan
GoalkeepersOn the plane: Jordan Pickford (Everton) and Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)In the departure lounge: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace)Hoping for a late ticket: Nick Pope (Newcastle)Pickford established himself as England’s number one ahead of the 2018 World Cup and is all but certain to go into his fourth major tournament as the man cagayan between the sticks cagayan
Ramsdale is his closest contender but David Raya’s arrival at Arsenal is impacting his playing time and could well damage his international ambitions cagayan
Johnstone has supplanted Pope as third choice for the time being cagayan
DefendersOn the plane: Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle) and Kyle Walker (Manchester City)In the departure lounge: Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Reece James (Chelsea) and Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)Hoping for a late ticket: Conor Coady (Leicester), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa) and Ben White (Arsenal)Trippier, Stones, Walker and Maguire have been to every previous major tournament under Southgate and will do so again if fit and playing – not something that is a given with the latter cagayan
James undoubtedly has the quality to be on the plane but needs to prove his fitness cagayan
The Chelsea skipper missed the World Cup through injury and has struggled for an issue-free run since – not ideal given the competition at right-back cagayan
Injured team-mate Chilwell is in a similar position but there is a dearth of options at left-back beyond him and Shaw cagayan
Colwill can fill in there as he did on his England debut against Australia, which will boost the central defender’s hopes cagayan
Guehi has established himself as third-choice centre-back cagayan
Dunk and Tomori furthered their case for inclusion in recent camps in the absence of injured Mings, whose Aston Villa team-mate Konsa cannot be far from a call-up cagayan
Coady and White have not been selected since Qatar, while fellow World Cup squad selection Dier’s lack of club action has seen him fall out of consideration cagayan
MidfieldersOn the plane: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City) and Declan Rice (Arsenal)In the departure lounge: Conor Gallagher (Chelsea) and Mason Mount (Manchester United)Hoping for a late ticket: Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) and James Ward-Prowse (West Ham)Bellingham would be in any squad in the world, as would Rice cagayan
There are questions over Phillips and Henderson given their club situations, but Southgate has so far seen enough to stick with two players he trusts implicitly cagayan
The cagayan Football Association now lists Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder, with his versatility and qualities surely enough to see him involved in a midfield that Gallagher is now a regular part of cagayan
Mount’s difficult end to last season and injury-impacted start to life at Old Trafford has seen him miss out on recent squads, but Southgate is a long-term admirer of the Euro 2020 final starter cagayan
In-form Ward-Prowse has not been called up despite his fine start to life at West Ham cagayan
ForwardsOn the plane: Phil Foden (Manchester City), Jack Grealish (Manchester City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) and Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)In the departure lounge: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), James Maddison (Tottenham), Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) and Callum Wilson (Newcastle)Hoping for a late ticket: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal) and Ivan Toney (Brentford)England are blessed with an abundance of attacking options cagayan
Skipper Kane is a certainty, as is fleet-footed Saka cagayan
Foden, Grealish and Rashford are established performers under Southgate, while Maddison is now a regular squad member cagayan
There are decisions to make beyond them cagayan
Sterling has won 82 caps for his country but has not featured since December’s World Cup quarter-final loss to France cagayan
Bowen is another fighting for a sport after his October recall, while Eze will hope to earning back the spot he got before injury cagayan
Under-21 Euros winner Gibbs-White is another knocking on the door cagayan
As for Kane’s back-up, Watkins scored on his return to the set-up and Nketiah made his debut this month cagayan
But Wilson will be hoping to head into another tournament in that role cagayan
Toney is the most interesting alternative but his cagayan betting ban does not end until January cagayan

“We are the bomb squad and we knew we had to play a massive role cagayan
” If South Africa’s narrow win over England in the Rugby World Cup semi-final could be summed up in one sentence, then this proclamation from Vincent Koch after the game would probably be it cagayan
When Koch emerged from the replacements on 55 minutes to take the place of starting tighthead prop Frans Malherbe, Owen Farrell had just slotted a drop goal from downtown Paris to give England a 15-6 lead cagayan
Nine points may not seem a lot but, with the final quarter of the match beckoning and the rain and wind increasing at the Stade de France, it was a comparatively huge deficit cagayan
Throughout the first few minutes of the second half, the Springboks had more or less emptied their bench as Ox Nche, RG Snyman, Kwagga Smith, Deon Fourie, Faf de Klerk and Willie Le Roux all entered the fray to go alongside the controversial 30th-minute substitution of starting fly half Manie Libbok for Handre Pollard cagayan
With their World Cup title defence hanging by a thread, South Africa trusted their bench and got their reward cagayan
Koch and Nche splintered the previously effective English scrum, Snyman burrowed his way across the line for the game’s only try and Pollard nervelessly converted tricky kicks to complete the hardest-fought of turnarounds – 10 unanswered points, a 16-15 win and a date with the All Blacks in another World Cup final next Saturday cagayan
Of the various phrases rugby has adopted over the years to describe those players in the matchday squad but not in the starting line-up – from the traditional “replacements” and the cagayan football-ised “substitutes” through to the Eddie Jones-preferred ‘finishers’, the slightly patronising “impact players” and the frankly ludicrous “game-changers” adopted by Harlequins during the Paul Gustard era – none has captured the imagination quite like South Africa’s “bomb squad” cagayan
It doesn’t matter if you think it’s a slightly self-serving and faintly ridiculous term, the players fully buy into the ethos of what it stands for cagayan
The intensity and physicality that generation after generation of Springbok has prided themselves on is summed up by this two-word mantra cagayan
“Each person knows exactly his role in the team, whether you’re starting or in the bomb squad,” explained Koch cagayan
“When we created the bomb squad, we knew exactly what our job is cagayan
The starters start the whole process and it’s for us to come and finish it cagayan
“All the players on the bomb squad are very excited to make a massive difference in the game cagayan
”Vincent Koch celebrated RG Snyman’s try as the bomb squad thrived (AFP via Getty Images)And against England, when the chips were down, they realised they needed to step up more than ever cagayan
“The bomb squad always stands for energy,” added Koch cagayan
“We needed to create a nice vibe cagayan
Putting the replacements on a bit earlier helped the boys to start to bring that energy and lift up the spirit and bring a massive work-rate cagayan
”Where South Africa’s replacements thrived, perhaps England’s faltered just a touch cagayan
The English gameplan, devised by Steve Borthwick and perfectly executed by the players for the windy and rainy Parisian conditions, relied upon relentless kicking, winning the subsequent aerial battle, slowing the game down and dominating the set-piece cagayan
Maybe then, they could escape with a win against an objectively superior team cagayan
They kicked 93 per cent of possession away (the highest percentage of the tournament), had an average ruck speed of 6 cagayan
73s (the slowest of the tournament) and had zero linebreaks (the only team to do so in a game at this tournament) cagayan
They disrupted South African lineouts, turned over multiple mauls and Borthwick’s decision to play his two strongest scrummaging props – Dan Cole and Joe Marler – from the start earned them scrum parity and redemption from the disaster in that facet during the 2019 World Cup final cagayan
Ox Nche was immense from the bench against the Springboks (EPA)This is a Springboks side that pride themselves on their dominance up front, as shown by opting for a scrum after calling a mark in their own 22 during the quarter-final victory over France cagayan
Of course, they won a penalty from it cagayan
Yet England were holding their own during those engagements, even thriving, and most importantly winning on the scoreboard cagayan
But the innate problem with starting your best scrummagers came to fruition in the second half cagayan
Replacement props Ellis Genge and Kyle Sinckler are far more dynamic around the park and more destructive carriers than their veteran counterparts but, with England showing no desire to run any plays more than two metres either side of the previous breakdown, those skills were negated once they came on for Marler and Cole cagayan
Instead, their inferior scrummaging was brutally exposed by a fired-up Koch and Nche, who turned parity into Springbok dominance cagayan
They won two scrums against the head, including a vital one at 15-6 down on their own line, and engineered multiple penalties on their own feed, including the most vital of all – on halfway, with 77 minutes on the clock and England leading 15-13 cagayan
Pollard banged over the long kick and the rest was history cagayan
Handre Pollard broke English hearts with his late penalty (PA Wire)Nche was coy when asked in the mixed zone after the game what had made the difference at scrum-time in the final quarter and how he bested his opposite number, Sinckler cagayan
“That is the dark arts,” he smiled cagayan
“It is hard to explain to you cagayan
We had a plan for that cagayan
We knew what we were trying to achieve cagayan
“They have had a great scrum for the competition and a great hit cagayan
Our focus was surviving that and applying pressure cagayan
Our mentality for every scrum is to get a penalty if we can cagayan
If they do survive, we play out the back and get into our shape cagayan
”The “dark arts” ultimately won the day, South Africa survived a second straight one-point knockout match and must now plan how to overcome the All Blacks in a battle to be the first side to win four men’s Rugby World Cups cagayan
Luckily, they have a not-so-secret weapon cagayan
“We are the bomb squad cagayan
