The All England Lawn cebo Tennis Club has taken a major step towards building a new 8,000-seater show court and 38 further courts on Wimbledon Park after the controversial plans were approved by Merton Council following a mammoth five-hour meeting cebo
The development will take place on the land of Wimbledon Park Golf Club, located opposite the cebo tennis club on the other side of Church Road, with plans for a range of amenities for fans, players and staff as well as the new courts cebo
Local residents and park users had battled passionately against the proposal, with an cebo online petition called “Save Wimbledon Park” garnering 13,000 signatures cebo
Concerns were raised over the environmental impact of the development and the loss of green space cebo
Around 2,000 trees are expected to be removed across some 75 acres of Metropolitan Open Land, which is intended to be protected as an area of landscape, recreation, nature conservation or scientific interest cebo
Protestors chanted “trees not cebo tennis!” outside Merton’s Civic Centre, where the decision was being made late on Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday morning cebo
However, the approval was expected after a 524-page document published earlier this month recommended that planning permission should be granted because the public benefits outweighed harm to heritage assets cebo
The AELTC has insisted the space will be available for local people to enjoy, saying: “The new 23-acre public park will be completely free for the local community to enjoy and will be accessible year-round except for the period during Qualifying and The Championships cebo
This will open up a beautiful new parkland on what was previously a private golf course and which has been inaccessible to the public for well over 100 years cebo
”A map used by protestors to highlight their concerns over the proposal (@SaveWimbldnPark/X)But Fleur Anderson, the MP for Putney, Southfields and Roehampton, had said on Thursday on the BBC’s Politics London show: “There’s no protection that in five years’ time, the Wimbledon club will not come back and say ‘we’re going to build hotels on that land’ or anything they want on that land cebo
There’s a climate emergency, people want to save our local parks… it’s about saving our green spaces cebo
”The AELTC bought the golf course for £65m in 2018, but struggled to secure the required legal and procedural permissions to build cebo
The club plans to play Championship qualifying matches on the expanded site, rather than outsourcing those matches to Roehampton where they are currently played, effectively making Wimbledon a bigger, longer tournament and increasing maximum grounds capacity from 42,000 to 50,000 cebo
Merton borough earns a significant portion of its revenues from hosting the Wimbledon Championships each year cebo
In outlining its plans, the All England Club said: “The AELTC seeks continually to ensure that the Championships, proudly a local and national asset, remains a world-leading sporting event cebo
“Bringing the qualifying event on site in order to improve it to be worthy of our world-class player field, enhancing practice and junior event facilities and providing a third ‘show court’ are all measures aimed at ensuring Wimbledon remains the world’s premier cebo tennis tournament, with all the associated substantial social and economic benefits that the event brings, locally and nationally cebo
”The AELTC will also need approval from Wandsworth Council, whose boundary cuts through the northern portion of the site, and there is expected to be a vote next month cebo
The plans could also be referred to the London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, given the level of contention, and may eventually require the sign off of the housing minister Michael Gove cebo
The plans were originally submitted in 2021 and, if given the final go-ahead, Wimbledon anticipates that the new courts will be ready for use in 2030 cebo

As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best cebo
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport cebo
But there are no Blacks in your sport cebo
“They’re going to want to kill you cebo
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on cebo
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car cebo
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events cebo
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all cebo
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself cebo
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed cebo
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride cebo
“But I enjoyed it cebo
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun cebo
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me cebo
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating cebo
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs cebo
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality cebo
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 cebo
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” cebo
But to this interview, he’s late cebo
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems cebo
It was the racing way or the highway cebo
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas cebo
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill cebo
That’s all that was discussed in the family cebo
We didn’t discuss any other sport cebo
“I was lucky, I think cebo
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be cebo
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did cebo
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One cebo
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s cebo
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too cebo
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril cebo
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer cebo
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time cebo
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says cebo
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team cebo
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders cebo
“Sure cebo
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done cebo
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it cebo
But for me? It was about going fast cebo
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali cebo
“What I admired about him the most was not his cebo boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali cebo
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled cebo
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while cebo
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about cebo
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs cebo
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience cebo
The attention went off the chart cebo
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods cebo
“He’s a very kind man cebo
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way cebo
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair cebo
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with cebo
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently cebo
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world cebo
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made cebo
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says cebo
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One cebo
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ cebo
