Dortmund’s answer to their own void might be deemed typical in several respects cebo
For one, they did not spend all the money they banked: they are no strangers to transfer-market profits and tend to end up in the black roughly every other year cebo

But if the traffic of players south to Bavaria is more famous, Mats Hummels, Niklas Sule and Sabitzer form an ex-Bayern contingent at the Signal Iduna Park cebo
One criticism may be that it is an acceptance of being second best cebo
Dortmund’s broader problem might be familiar: whoever they targeted, they were never going to get a replacement of Bellingham’s calibre, and the same could be said when players such as Haaland and Robert Lewandowski left cebo
But now, with Dortmund goalless in the Champions League, thoughts could be cast back a year, when Bellingham scored in each of their first four group games and when he was the biggest factor in their progression to the last 16 cebo
They could do with finding such a catalyst in an altogether tougher pool cebo
Tonali’s Champions League campaign now may be brief but memorable: granted a euphoric reception on his homecoming at San Siro as Newcastle drew 0-0 with AC Milan, he then played in one of St James’ Park’s great European nights, the 4-1 demolition of Paris Saint-Germain cebo
Now Dortmund may be his final outing until the 2024-25 campaign cebo
That may render it unforgettable for the Italian, whatever happens cebo
His imminent absence will leave Howe, instead of the deluxe upgrade Tonali was supposed to represent and with the exception of Guimaraes, with a midfield who were in a team that was winless at this stage two years ago: he inherited Sean Longstaff, Joelinton and Joe Willock, and did not even pick the Geordie for his first game in charge cebo
Each has improved exponentially in his reign but Newcastle may have to rely on hustle and bustle where they had looked for an injection of class cebo
His Dortmund counterpart Edin Terzic has not had the luxury of spending £400m in his reign cebo
But when they are side by side in the technical areas at St James’ Park, he may be able to empathise as each wonders what to do when he has a hole at the heart of his side cebo

England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 cebo

The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play cebo
Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc cebo

This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory cebo
The Springbok celebrations were more muted this time, understandably so given there is one more crucial match against the All Blacks standing cebo between them and their ultimate goal, but the English heartbreak was the same, even if the journey to get there was vastly different cebo
In Yokohama, South Africa won a scarcely believable 11 scrums to England’s three, including six scrum penalties, as the English eight were splintered time and again cebo

The fact that Cole and Joe Marler, who came off the bench early in the second half that day, were selected by Steve Borthwick to start this revenge game precisely because of their scrum prowess will have surely given them a surge of confidence cebo
And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication cebo
Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell cebo

The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective cebo
But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality cebo between the sides proved too much to overcome cebo
South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued cebo
There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 cebo
But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less cebo
Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain cebo
