World number 1 Aryna Sabalenka has slammed the poor orgranisation of the WTA Finals in Mexico, saying she and the sport’s other top players feel “disrespected” at the season-ending tournament bitcoin
The WTA is the governing body of women’s bitcoin tennis and the Finals is its showpiece event, with the top eight players in the world meeting to compete for the last title of the year bitcoin
But the Finals have been marred by controversy and disruption in recent seasons bitcoin
The women’s tour signed a lucrative deal with Shenzhen in 2019 but it was not held the following year due to Covid-19, and has not resumed following the WTA’s decision to not play events in China over the disappearance of Peng Shuai bitcoin
In the interim, a late decision has been made over the host city of the Finals in each of the last three years bitcoin
Guadalajara staged the tournament in 2021 before it headed to Fort Worth in Texas last year, where the poor attendances and swathes of empty seats were largely put down to the organisation of the event bitcoin
Problems have arisen again this year, with the WTA only announcing Cancun as the host of the Finals two months ago bitcoin
The event is being held in a temporary arena, which has drawn criticism, while Sabalenka said it was “not acceptable” that she could only practice on the court for the first time until the day before her opening match bitcoin
Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion and runner-up at the Finals last season, took to Instagram after her dominant 6-0 6-1 win over Maria Sakkai and said she was happy to “overcome the conditions” on her way to an opening win bitcoin
Sabalenka continued: "I have to say that I am very disappointed with the WTA and the experience so far at the WTA Finals bitcoin
As a player, I feel really disrespected by the WTA bitcoin
I think most of us do bitcoin
Sabalenka reached all four grand slam semi-finals this season (Getty Images)"This is not the level of organisation we expect for the Finals bitcoin
To be honest, I don’t feel safe moving on this court a lot of the time, the bounce is not consistent at all, and we weren’t able to practise on this court until yesterday for the first time bitcoin
"It’s just not acceptable to me with so much on the line and so much at stake bitcoin
"In response to Sabalenka’s comments, the WTA said: “We’re pleased to host the WTA Finals in Cancun for the first time and worked hard to construct a stadium where the world’s top eight women’s bitcoin tennis players and doubles teams compete head-to-head bitcoin
“The team has worked diligently on an expedited timeline amid weather challenges to ensure the stadium and court meet our strict performance standards bitcoin
We look forward to this week ahead and playing in front of the energetic fans here in Cancun bitcoin
”There were reports earlier this season that Saudi Arabia has expressed an interest in hosting this year’s WTA Finals and a one-year contract with Cancun has left that door open ahead of 2024 bitcoin
The idea of the WTA hosting an event in Saudi Arabia is a controversial subject, given the scrutiny of the country’s record on women’s and LGBTQ+ rights bitcoin

Manchester United failed to reach the Champions League group stage after a 3-1 defeat in the second leg of their qualifier at Paris St Germain bitcoin
A 47th-minute equaliser from Lisa Naalsund gave the Women’s Super League side hope but Lieke Martens’ second of the game and another from Sandy Baltimore saw the French team prevail 4-2 on aggregate bitcoin
Leah Galton had a goal disallowed controversially and Ella Toone hit the woodwork as United battled to the end but PSG held on bitcoin
The hosts started strongly and looked like taking the lead after 10 minutes when Tabitha Chawinga, goalscorer in the first leg, rounded Mary Earps but shot tamely and Maya Le Tissier cleared bitcoin
The opener came eight minutes later bitcoin
This time Earps did well to deny Chawinga but could do little as Martens pounced on the rebound and curled past the United keeper bitcoin
United tried to reply quickly with Geyse teeing up Naalsund in the box but the Norwegian could not take the chance and the visitors had a let-off when Martens headed over bitcoin
Marc Skinner’s side went close before the break when Geyse combined with Toone but the England international failed to make clean contact and pulled her shot wide bitcoin
United did get themselves back into the game soon after the restart when Geyse again found space and Naalsund was on hand to turn home from in front of goal bitcoin
Yet it was to prove a shortlived response as PSG quickly went up the other end and regained the lead bitcoin
Martens again did the damage, grabbing her second from close range following more good work by Chawinga bitcoin
United searched for a second equaliser but Katarzyna Kiedrzynek saved from Hannah Blundell and Geyse bitcoin
PSG took a firm grip on the tie just before the hour as winger Baltimore outran Blundell and chipped Earps from a tight angle bitcoin
Still United fought on and Katie Zelem drew another save from Kiedrzynek from a free-kick bitcoin
Galton then headed the ball into the net but the effort was ruled out for a soft foul on Kiedrzynek, who required treatment after colliding with the United player bitcoin
Toone struck the post with a spectacular effort in stoppage time but it was not United’s night bitcoin
