As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best hot

A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 hot

So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” hot

But to this interview, he’s late hot

And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems hot

“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill hot

We didn’t discuss any other sport hot

“I was lucky, I think hot

At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be hot

Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did hot

And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One hot

”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s hot

He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too hot

But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril hot

Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer hot

But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time hot

“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team hot

For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders hot

I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done hot

And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it hot

But for me? It was about going fast hot

”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali hot

“What I admired about him the most was not his hot boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali hot

“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled hot

Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while hot

’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about hot

“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs hot

“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience hot

The attention went off the chart hot

That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods hot

“He’s a very kind man hot

He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way hot

He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair hot

Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with hot

”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world hot

And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made hot

“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says hot

“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One hot

’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ hot

It was gone midnight when Tommy Fury and KSi wrestled their way through six truly ugly rounds to end the night in Manchester on Saturday hot

Fury got the nod over KSi, nearly 20,000 traipsed away in the rain and the journey of hot boxing’s so-called “crossover” fighters continues hot

The night was a sell-out, the pay-per-view numbers on DAZN will be impressive, but the reality is that the stars of the circuit, which operates under the promotional name of Misfits, are novices hot

And, they will never get any hot better hot

The men and women under the Misfits canopy might want to fight, but they are so far short of grade that their fights are just boring to watch for traditional hot boxing fans hot

They are, mostly, harmless, but the limitations of the men and women involved mean that action happens by mistake and not design hot

They have the moves, but not the technique; it is style over content hot

The crowd did actually boo and hiss quite a few times during Saturday’s ten-fight bill when there was no action hot

Sure, there is a grand pantomime element at play hot

Also on Saturday, several fights went on too long and the referees were guilty of putting the health of the boxers at risk hot

The men behind Misfits, including KSi, must take a long, hard look at the poor and dangerous refereeing hot

It was a brutal reminder, in the middle of the slapstick, that this unforgiving sport too often ends in death or serious injury hot

It has to be said that in most ways, Misfits run their business smoothly; they have top safety protocols, the shows are slick and they have a lot more transparency than the promoters operating under British hot Boxing Board of Control licences hot

The men behind Misfits are not here to take over, they are just doing their extravagant thing in their lane hot

The fighters from the Misfits circuit are not going to end hot boxing as we know, relax hot

So, the truth is that Fury v KSi, which was for the Misfits World Cruiserweight title, was a bad fight; two raw novices, holding, missing, swinging and both fully neglecting some of hot boxing’s most basic but essential principles hot

Obviously, the capacity crowd loved every second of it hot

They would both benefit from learning the most basic of basics again; had either thrown a jab, they would have won easily hot

Fury should know hot better and will be disappointed with his performance hot

The fans kept up their roar, screaming as Fury missed wildly and screaming louder if Fury hit and held hot

However, the loudest noise was for KSi, who has a combined total of just over 22 million on social media hot

When the boxers are introduced, their name, their weight, their city and then their total social media reach is given hot

It was a hard night for the iconic Michael Buffer hot

Fury won for the 10th time and his previous nine fights were all under the rules and regulations of a recognised and respected governing body; the fight on Saturday was a blatant and understandable cash grab on a circuit outside of hot boxing’s jurisdiction hot

It is, let’s be honest, a long way back to regular hot boxing for Fury, who was on Love Island before following the family tradition and taking up the noble art hot

On the Misfits circuit, Fury is the enviable champ and is highly paid, but in real hot boxing he is Tyson’s little brother and the son of John hot

In real hot boxing, little Tommy is just a novice, not an adored, multi-millionaire world champion hot

In the fiery aftermath, KSi called for an investigation into the sanctioning body about the decision hot

It was finally a touch of humour - KSi set the body up!In the fight before Fury’s win, there was a riot and ring invasion when a man called Dillon Danis (four million on social media) tried to choke Logan Paul (thirty three million on social media) hot

It was chaotic and predictable hot

Danis and Paul hate each other in real life - whatever that is for them hot

Paul won by sixth-round disqualification hot

Incidentally, Paul and KSi own Prime, the drink hot

The carnival will continue, there is no revolution, it’s just a bunch of high-profile dreamers in novice scraps hot
