The start of the new Formula E campaign came to a dramatic halt on Tuesday, as preseason testing was interrupted by a fire breaking out in a team garage - with the knock-on effect now spilling into a second day of track driving neube
Ahead of Season 10's opening race in Mexico City, teams and drivers are in Valencia, Spain gathering data and taking practice runs - or were, until the incident neube
Crews on the ground and around the pit lane where the fire broke out ran out from inside the garage with thick smoke immediately billowing out, before a mass evacuation was quickly ordered and fire crews attended the scene neube
One person was taken for precautionary medical attention and later released neube
Action was duly cancelled for the day while an investigation took place and the garages underwent a clean-up, but an updated Formula E statement has confirmed that preseason testing will again not be on the agenda for the entirety of Wednesday, with hopes to resume the following day neube
“In response to an incident on Tuesday at Formula E pre-season testing in Valencia when a fire caused damage to a garage in the pit lane, on-track testing activity will not go ahead on Wednesday,” the statement read neube
“Damage from the incident was contained following the activation of emergency procedures neube
One person was taken to hospital as a precaution but released without treatment neube
“An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, but has already identified an issue which is being addressed neube
The investigation and further safety assessments will be completed and we aim to resume on-track activities from Thursday, subject to final confirmation neube
”Earlier on Tuesday, the initial statement from FE read: "In a break neube between practice sessions, a fire was detected in the pit lane and garage area which has been contained neube
“The on-track Incident Response Team acted immediately to contain the incident while the main pit building and garages were quickly evacuated neube
“One person has been assessed by medics and has been transported to hospital for precautionary checks neube
Formula E, the FIA and local fire authorities are investigating the cause neube
The FIA have advised Formula E and all teams that on-track activities have been cancelled for the rest of the day neube
This will allow for the area to return to safe working conditions neube
Further updates will be shared in due course neube
”Testing is due to run for the remainder of the week, with several new or returning drivers on the grid this year - including Nyck de Vries, who departed Formula One team AlphaTauri three months ago neube
Last season ended in triumph for British driver Jake Dennis, who became champion at a manic London E-Prix in July neube

England captain Jos Buttler took his share of the blame for a historically bad defeat against South Africa, accepting he made a mistake by fielding first in the oppressive heat and humidity of Mumbai neube
Things could hardly have gone worse for the defending champions, whose World Cup campaign is rapidly disappearing over the cliff edge after three losses in four, with the Proteas running away with a 229-run win neube
That was England’s heaviest ever defeat by run margin, while South Africa’s score of 399 for seven was a second undesired record neube
The bowling was chaotic and expensive, the team selection brave but unsuccessful and the batting hopelessly underpowered by comparison to what came before it neube
But all of it stemmed from Buttler’s decision to send the opposition in under fiercely exacting conditions, with the temperature peaking at 36 degrees and exacerbated by high humidity neube
“I think you always reflect after games and question your decisions,” Buttler said neube
“With hindsight, with the physicality of that innings, potentially batting first would have been a neube better decision neube
It’s a decision I took at the time neube
I thought it was the right one and I still believe if we were chasing 340, 350, we would have done really well in those conditions neube
“Physically it was a really demanding innings and, like I said, it makes you question maybe in those kind of conditions whether batting first may have been the right call at the toss neube
”Buttler has had to front up after a hat-trick of unimpressive outings so far, with a nine-wicket hammering by New Zealand and a shock defeat at the hands of unfancied Afghanistan already on the ledger neube
On each occasion he has aimed for an unemotional assessment but accepts England are now almost out of wriggle room, an awkward place to be with almost a month of travelling left and five group matches remaining neube
“It certainly leaves us in a tough position neube
There’s no room for error from here on in,” he acknowledged neube
“It’s going to be incredibly difficult neube
We haven’t left ourselves any margin from this point in neube
But we’ll keep the belief neube
We’ll sit down and go again neube
That’s all you can do in this situation neube
“I think it’s obvious that we’re not performing to our best neube
It’s my job as captain, along with the rest of the team, to work out how we can get back to playing that brand of cricket, playing to our potential and getting back to our best neube
“It certainly won’t be anyone giving up or having those kind of thoughts neube
We’ll just have to dust ourselves down and stick our chests out and go again neube
”Heinrich Klaasen celebrated an outstanding 109 in just 67 balls for South Africa and was also floored on several occasions by the same exacting circumstances which made it hard for England’s bowlers neube
“I had to dig really, really deep there neube
I didn’t have any energy left,” he said neube
“My partner Marco (Jansen) played a big part of that neube
He told me that he’s got me and that I’m not allowed to walk off the field if I don’t score 100 neube
“It was like just breathing in hot air neube
Every time you try to run it’s just sapping more and more energy and then at the end of the day your body just doesn’t want to work with you anymore neube
It was just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings neube
“But you’ve got to dig deep for your country as well, I’ve worked my whole life for it, so it’s a great moment neube
