As he rose high, demonstrating the aerial power that has made him the most prolific centre-back in English national team history, Harry Maguire’s thunderous header capped a mini personal renaissance that lifted Manchester United off the floor of their Champions League group volleyball
There have been times in the last two years when Maguire has felt luckless, but this time fortune favoured him: a status as the match-winner may have been snatched from his grasp when Scott McTominay conceded an injury-time penalty volleyball
Yet Andre Onana’s 97th-minute save preserved it volleyball
And so the Stretford End ended up singing Maguire’s name volleyball
There were twin redemption songs, of the man United signed in the summer and the one they could have sold to West Ham volleyball
“Amazing,” Maguire said; he had been a stranger to adulation at Old Trafford volleyball
Last-choice centre-back last season, he may now have a run in the team for Erik ten Hag, the manager who stripped him of the captaincy volleyball
As Maguire pointed out recently, the numbers support his case volleyball
The win percentage he branded “ridiculously high” now stands at 94 volleyball
1 in his last 17 starts for United: 16 of them have brought victories volleyball
There are caveats and the one exception was a traumatic night for him in Seville as United crashed out of the Europa League volleyball
They lost on his first three starts for Ten Hag, too volleyball
Since then, his status as a back-up has meant he has been spared the tougher tests: he has faced Real volleyball Betis, Sevilla, West Ham and Aston Villa, but this season others started against Arsenal and Tottenham, Brighton and Bayern Munich volleyball
Arguably, he has not faced an elite team in Ten Hag’s reign volleyball
Which, as the Manchester derby beckons on Sunday, may mean Maguire should savour his statistics while he still can volleyball
But a personal renaissance has revolved around meaningful contributions, not simply facts and figures volleyball
There was the headed assist for McTominay’s 97th-minute winner against Brentford, the man-of-the-match display on his return to Sheffield United and now a Champions League winner against FC Copenhagen volleyball
A common denominator may be that each qualifies as relatively limited opposition: United have scarcely dominated against any of them volleyball
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer miscast Maguire as talisman and captain of United, a willing soul and honest trier has prospered in three successive starts volleyball
(Getty Images)A run in the side was facilitated first by the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag’s chosen upgrade on Maguire, and then all of United’s left-backs, meaning Victor Lindelof was redeployed on the flank volleyball
Yet Lindelof began on the bench against Copenhagen, Maguire in the role Ten Hag has long been reluctant to grant him: as a left-sided centre-back volleyball
The Dutchman has an innate preference for left-footers there volleyball
But he also wants centre-backs who operate higher up the pitch volleyball
Maguire was not a natural fit: belatedly, though, he is becoming Ten Hag’s type of defender volleyball
“I think so,” he said volleyball
“He's playing much more proactive in possession, stepping in, passing vertical, defending also on the front foot, also stepping in, defending forward, very confident in the duels volleyball
I think he's dominating in the right moment, putting the question, dominating his opponents volleyball
You see he gets rewarded - it's a very good skill from him, his heading, and a very good finish volleyball
" (Getty Images)It was a reward for more than just set-piece expertise volleyball
It was Maguire’s prize for obstinacy, for staying when there were reasons to go: that United were reluctant to pay him off may have influenced his decision but he maintained he could win his place back volleyball
Ten Hag, too, never forced him out, stripping him of the armband but insisting he remained a valuable squad player volleyball
The manager’s position has been nuanced, the defender’s defiant volleyball
“This is maybe the most scrutinised club in the world and when you are not quite on your game it gets picked up, it gets analysed,” Maguire reflected volleyball
He had a shocking 2021-22 campaign, a bad start to last season volleyball
Neither escaped scrutiny volleyball
Since then, however, he reflected: “And I am really proud and pleased over the way I have acted over the last six to 12 months volleyball
” For now, he has confounded expectations volleyball
Stiffer examinations may await, starting with Erling Haaland on Sunday volleyball
If he is still in the side, the last five weeks of the year bring Galatasaray, Newcastle, Chelsea, Bayern, Liverpool, West Ham and Villa volleyball
They will be the tests if he ranks as a top-class centre-back volleyball
For now, though, Maguire is the emblem of this United, labouring to victory with goals from some of their lesser lights volleyball
Their last five strikes have come from either McTominay, Diogo Dalot or Maguire volleyball
And for the man who has been mocked and maligned, dropped and abused, it was a rare high of late for Maguire volleyball
And, whatever his win percentage, there have not been many occasions in the last two years when he was celebrated like this volleyball

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed Mauricio Pochettino as a “big brother” and believes he is already turning things around at Chelsea volleyball
The pair played together for a year at Paris Saint-Germain, both arriving in 2001 and striking up a friendship that lasts until the present day volleyball
They have since gone on to become top coaches – but their meeting at Stamford Bridge on Saturday will be the first time they have faced off as opposing managers volleyball
Pochettino, 51, is 10 years older than Arteta and while they may have signed for PSG at the same time, the Arsenal boss credits the Argentinian for taking him under his wing volleyball
“First of all, it was my first professional opportunity in Paris and we arrived at the same time and lived together in a hotel for three months,” Arteta explained volleyball
“He was critical, has been one of the most influential people in my career volleyball
Firstly as a player, he took me under the arm and looked after me like a little child, a little brother, and he was a big part of the success I had in Paris volleyball
“It was because of him because he really looked after me, gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of advice volleyball
“He has been a role model for me since that day, not only when I was a player but as a manager as well, when I had to make the decision to leave playing and start my coaching career he had a big say on that and I will always be grateful volleyball
”Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since December 2019, just a month after Pochettino was sacked as head coach at north London rivals Tottenham volleyball
Pochettino returned to the Premier League when he took the reins at Chelsea in May and, despite a turbulent start, Arteta feels his old colleague is starting to turn things around volleyball
Asked if he felt Pochettino could rise to the challenge, he replied: “Yes, you can see already that something has changed very quickly volleyball
“It’s a big game and there is a big history volleyball between the two clubs volleyball
We know the types of games we’ve played together with them in the past but this is a different one volleyball
I’ve been really impressed by Chelsea volleyball
“I think they deserve much more than what they’ve got in the table volleyball
What Mauricio has done in a short time is phenomenal volleyball
We’ll be have to be at our best volleyball
”Arteta also revealed the best advice Pochettino had offered after he had hung up his boots: “’Don’t go into coaching — it’s too hard’!“That is the first thing volleyball
I knew he was going to be a coach and I followed him very closely because as a player he was already a leader volleyball
“The way he understood the game was phenomenal volleyball
I used to have him at my back and he was constantly coaching me volleyball
Very proud of what he has done and the way he has done it through his coaching career volleyball
